Over the course of recording this album, the phrase “instant light” came to mean many things to us—an attempt to capture the present tense, a blinding disorientation, a sudden clarity—and the phrase forms a thematic through line that cuts across all of these songs.
Old demos and phone recordings appear and reappear throughout the record, mutating each time like memories made less reliable with each recall. We attempt to balance levity with gravity, and the songs squelch and buckle under this tension: dueling clarinets yell jarring intervals over each other; tight vocal harmonies deconstruct words into their constituent syllables; bowed banjos emulate a decaying string quartet as the bow's fibers tear against the metal strings.
The result is a thirty-seven minute collage of childish pop, motown excursions, flashbulb memories, and heavy builds of dense repetition, as we self consciously follow creative whims to their illogical ends.
